Other AbstractThis paper reports an efficient approach for the synthesis of a-ketoglutaric acid via Al(III) salt promoted transamination of glyoxylic acid monohydrate with glutamic acid. Under optimized conditions (80 degrees C, pH=5), the transamination proceeded efficiently in an aqueous solution of glyoxylic acid and glutamic acid in the presence of a catalytic amount of KAl(SO4)(2)center dot 12H(2)O, affording a-ketoglutaric acid in up to 87% yield. This method features inexpensive chemical feedstocks, easy operation and high productivity, thus providing an efficient and practical approach to a-ketoglutaric acid.
