A bacterium, identified as pseudomonas sp., growing on hydrocarbon or vegetable oil, produced surfaceactive compounds. The analysis of whole culture broth indicated that the lipids produced were as major metabolite. The surface-active components of the culture broth were mainly glycolipids and monoglyceride. 5% culture broth reduced surface tension to 27mN/m, reduced interfacial tension to 5mN/m and was stable during exposure to high salinity, high temperature and a wide range of pH values, which sowed its potential value in enhanced oil-recovery and bioremediation.
